What Can Marketers Learn From Web Summit's Rise From Dublin Meetup to 70,000?

Web Summit grew from a few hundred people in Dublin in 2009 to more than 70,000 a year in Lisbon. It got there by holding on to one simple idea, using famous speakers to earn press attention, moving when its venue began to damage the experience, and recovering quickly after a damaging crisis in 2023. Each step offers a lesson that marketing teams can apply to their own brands and events.

What was the original idea, and why did it travel?

Paddy Cosgrave, David Kelly and Daire Hickey founded the event in 2009 with a one-line premise: put the business world and the technology world in the same room. Accounts of the first edition vary from about 150 people to around 400. The Irish Times uses the lower figure. Everyone agrees it was a modest gathering that included a pub crawl around Dublin.

The lesson: a positioning you can say in one sentence scales better than a feature list. Web Summit added tracks, countries and stages over the years, but the core promise stayed easy to repeat.

Early proof helped. In 2012 the connected-home startup SmartThings won the event's startup competition and was later acquired by Samsung. A single story like that does more for a brand's credibility than any number of claims about its own quality.

How fast did the audience grow?

Very fast. By 2011 the event had outgrown its first venue and moved to the Royal Dublin Society. When the 2015 edition opened, Portuguese newspaper Observador reported that it had grown from 400 to 42,000 participants in four years.

Speakers did a lot of that work. The 2011 line-up included YouTube co-founder Chad Hurley, Twitter co-founder Jack Dorsey and WordPress creator Matt Mullenweg. Those names gave founders a reason to buy a ticket and gave journalists a reason to write about a young event in Dublin.

What happens when the venue starts hurting the brand?

Growth brought problems. In 2014 the Wi-Fi at the RDS failed badly enough to become a public embarrassment, and Cosgrave apologised to attendees. By 2015 the organisers and the Irish government were publicly at odds over hotel capacity, transport and infrastructure. In September 2015 Cosgrave announced that Web Summit would leave Dublin.

The lesson: for an event, the experience is the product. A technology conference with broken Wi-Fi sends a message about the brand that no campaign can undo. When the setting holds back the product, changing the setting is a brand decision, not only an operational one.

Lisbon offered a large arena, now the MEO Arena, next to the FIL exhibition centre, with one transport hub at Oriente station. The first Lisbon edition in 2016 drew more than 53,000 people, and Portugal's prime minister, António Costa, joined Cosgrave on stage at the opening. In 2018 the two sides agreed a ten-year deal reported to be worth €110 million, and the current contract runs until the end of 2028. Cosgrave moved his family to Lisbon. The Wikipedia entry on Web Summit traces the full sequence.

A partner that sees you as strategic, as the city of Lisbon plainly did, is worth more than a cheaper venue.

How did star speakers turn a conference into a news story?

Web Summit's Centre Stage mixes technology leaders with heads of state, scientists, athletes and artists. That mix is a deliberate reach strategy. Each category of guest brings a different set of reporters.

  • 2017: Stephen Hawking addressed Opening Night by video and warned that AI could be the best or the worst thing ever to happen to humanity. Fortune and outlets around the world covered it.
  • 2018: Tim Berners-Lee, inventor of the World Wide Web, opened the event with a call to protect the open web.
  • 2019: Edward Snowden joined remotely, Tony Blair spoke on technology and political power, and football players Eric Cantona and Ronaldinho appeared on the same programme. The media called it "Davos for geeks." More than 2,000 journalists from around 1,000 outlets covered that year, and The Drum described the event as neutral ground where tech and politics collide.

The lesson: famous names amplify a topic, but the topic has to be chosen early. Web Summit was putting the AI debate on its main stage years before generative AI went mainstream. When the subject arrived, the event already looked like the place to discuss it.

What does 2023 show about reputation recovery?

In October 2023, Cosgrave's social media comments about the Israel-Hamas war led to withdrawals by Google, Meta, Amazon and Intel. He apologised and resigned as CEO on 21 October. Katherine Maher, former CEO of the Wikimedia Foundation, led that year's edition and left in early 2024 to run NPR. In April 2024 Cosgrave returned as chief executive, as The Irish Times reported. By the 2024 edition, Meta and IBM were back as sponsors, and attendance reached around 71,500 from 153 countries.

The public record does not explain exactly why the recovery was so fast. Two points are clear. A founder's personal channel can become a brand's biggest risk overnight. And an audience that gets real value from showing up, meeting investors, customers and press in one week, gives a brand room to recover that a weaker product would not have.

Can a constraint become a product?

The 2020 edition went fully online. Web Summit adapted its in-house software, later called Summit Engine, to run virtual events at scale, and has since licensed it to other large events, including CES. A forced change of format became a business line of its own.

What is the brand worth now?

The 2025 edition, the tenth in Lisbon, welcomed 71,386 attendees from 157 countries, including a record 1,857 investors and 2,725 exhibiting startups. The company reported revenue of more than €100 million in 2025 and runs Web Summit Rio, Web Summit Qatar, Web Summit Vancouver and RISE in Asia. One flagship event has been stretched into a portfolio.

What should a marketing team take from this?

  1. Keep the core promise short. Expand around it, not away from it.
  2. Collect early proof stories and tell them often.
  3. Treat the experience as the brand. Fix the venue, the product or the channel when it lets customers down.
  4. Use big names to open new audiences, and pick the topic before it peaks.
  5. Plan for leadership risk in founder-led brands.
  6. Turn constraints into assets where you can.
